Workshop leaders Evonne Ellis, MFA in Creative Writing, and MSBEC’s Community Education Coordinator, Kayla Marie, will guide us through writing prompts that will remind us how to listen with all of our senses, including our hearts. We will listen to the natural sounds around us and also within ourselves. As always, we will have time to reflect and share as a community. No writing experience necessary! In 1978, Alan Venetsky invited around 150 locals to his farm in Williams, Oregon to trade crops at harvest time. This became an annual event with the skunk as its mascot and "Dedicated to the Cultural and Religious Integrity of Natural Peoples Everywhere" as its motto. By 1995, the Barter Fair had exploded into a counter-culture festival spanning three days, drawing over 10,000 people to the historic 156-acre Buckley farm in Ruch ... and also drawing the scrutiny of Jackson County's commissioners and sheriff. In 1996, a new $18,000 fee imposed by the county, and the presence of almost 100 sheriff's deputies with vans ready for mass arrests, caused a significant drop in attendance and led to the demise of the Fair as well as to federal civil rights litigation. Jackson County was found guilty of violating First Amendment rights and paid $60,000 to the Barter Fair organizers.
Three participants in the Fair from its early years through the 1990s will share their memories and memorabilia. Jessie Spero recently sold her farm in Williams to move to Phoenix. Maya Reames remains a resident of Williams, as does Michelle Scherer who continues to grow and sell organic produce locally.

Please note that November's Ashland program will happen on the 18th, the third Wednesday of the month. The library will be closed on the 11th for Veterans Day.
The annual ANPF Fall Festival is an opportunity for playwrights to workshop their scripts with professional actors and directors, often for the first time. It is also a chance to connect with audience members during talk-backs following each reading, where patrons can share their thoughts directly with the artists to help continue the growth of their work. These talk-backs are led by ANPF’s Host Playwrights.
This year's winning plays are The Caelumids by DJ Hills, Netta and Ru by Lisa Langford, persian girl play by Ida Esmaeli, and Threshold by Stephanie Fybel.
Come be a part of the creative process as these new plays come to life through the magic of a dramatic reading. Be sure to stay for the talkbacks and share your insights with the artists.
Create fun and delicious treats that are perfect for a spooky celebration (parents may drop off or participate for free).
